This is typed in rich text format, 12pt font.

This line is typed in 10 pt font.

This line is typed in 8 pt font.

I can't answer your question, other than to say it is not deliberate.  My
mail program (Outlook) is defaulted to 10pt.

Did the three lines I typed above come out the same or different for you?
SMTP servers kind of strip out all formatting and send plain text I think, I
don't know why your reader gets it as 8pt.  This is not my area of specialty
however.

You seem to be using 8 pt type for composing your emails. That's
considered legible in a newspaper, but when it's broken up by a 72
dpi monitor screen, it is totally illegible. Why not use 12 point?
