The process is called single pointing and anyone who is knowledgeable  
about lathe work should be familiar with it. If not, any introductory 
machinists book will describe it in detail. The fly in the ointmennt is 
the need for a thread gage to verify the thread is correct. If you could 
find a correct nut ( good luck ) that could be used.
