If it were the battery, it wouldn’t have slowly died while it was running. The battery's only job is to get the engine started. After that, the alternator is supposed to take over.

Ditto! Seven years is about the life span for any battery. I had the same problem with a 2 year old battery with a dead cell. Take it in and get it load tested.
