Rick, I think as long as the info only contained the year and assembly plant (naturally on the VIN itself), the particulars of the car itself would be unknown, i.e., 307/350/396/454 engine wouldn't be known on 69-71 Chevelles. If someone is trying to phony up a VIN for a stolen car, they're probably going to have plates from another one anyway and if not, they can simply make one up - doesn't even have to be a correct VIN as far as selling the car goes.
In fact, in a few years it might help recover a stolen car. Say I post the VIN to my El Camino and next week it gets stolen or totaled. Someone takes the VIN plate and attaches it to another El Camino and tries to sell it. Potential buyer checks the page, clicks the link and emails me about the car. I give 'em the scoop and the seller is apprehended with a phony VIN plate. Another option would be instead of putting the current owner's email address for privacy reasons or simply because email addresses do get changed, I keep a database offline of the owner's name and/or email address. A user clicks the VIN link and they send their email to me which I forward to the owner listed in the offline database. It'd then be up to the owner to contact the interested party.
