How do you know? Does your ear tell you that it's more advanced than what specs call for? Wouldn’t you need a light to tell you that?

I time mine "by ear" (i.e. by seeing how it runs afterward) too because there is no gauge on the timing cover. I recently found that it ran better when I retarded the timing a little (I was getting some pinging, which is what caused me to want to fool with it in the first place). How is it set compared to factory specs? I have no idea. How does it run? Great.

I always liked to time the engine by ear and that usually meant that the engine ran best at several more degrees advanced than what the specs called for.
