They don't effect the break-in of an engine much
but engine break-in can effect the header coating, due to the engine being
run up at a standstill during camshaft break-in. The higher temps can gray the
coating.

This is an honest understanding question. How could coated headers
affect the break in of an engine? The only thing the engine cares about
is exhaust back pressure. IE, number of bends and length of pipe
run. I am trying to understand this. The only thing
the exhaust valves know is back pressure. Outlet temperature is
irrelevant.

CHEVELLE HEADERS
I'm thinking I'll buy the Sanderson. Many of the sites mention not to
break in an engine with coated headers, so I'm thinking getting the painted
Sanderson's, breaking the engine in, then taking them off and shipping them
off to Jet Hot for the Sterling coating. Any idea what that coating will set
me back? I have a quote request in with Jet Hot but haven't heard anything
yet..
As always, thanks for your help Clint.

I installed a pair of the QP1000 headers on my 40 Ford coupe
streetrod back in 1992 and had a lot of problems getting them to seal at
the cylinder head. Those headers are an iron casting similar to stock
exhaust manifolds, not tube headers. I never even talked to Sanderson but
finally found a gasket set-up that cured the problem. However,I
installed a pair of their intermediate 1 7/8" BB tube headers on my 68 El
Camino w/468" and loved them. My 69 El Camino is really low so the header
clearance really needs to be taken into consideration. Like I mentioned
before,I'd try the Patriot or Hedman intermediates but they won't clear
the Z-bar. Hooker and most other full-length headers hang down way too
much so they're not an option, either.
Good luck in your search,Larry. Let us know what you decide on.

Clint,
I hear what you're saying. I'm finding it real difficult to find
anything that meets everything I'm looking for that's affordable. I like
what I see with the Sanderson BB3. I'm just going to move a bit slower
before I buy I think.
Here's a couple of samples of the customer service issues I've
seen. The S10 link is down at the moment, but the Complaints.com one is
working...

Just curious but where did you read the complaints,Larry? Not
discounting your concerns at all but is there any header manufacturer
that satifies everyone? If so,please let me know because I'll be
changing headers in the near future. So far,the only ones I've seen
that will give me the best ground clearance and allow a manual
transmission are the Sandersons. Hedman and Patriot make intermediate
headers that have good ground clearance but won't allow a manual
trans. Some people swear by Hooker or Hedman but from my
experiences,I'm not impressed at all. It seems that you really do get
what you pay for, especially when it comes to headers. Having said
that,I may end up buying a pair of Stainless Works full length units.
They cost around $600-700 but supposedly tuck up under the
undercarriage very well.

Clint,
I've been doing some web research on Sanderson headers. I've
found several complaints about their headers cracking where the
primaries come out of the flange, and the alarming part is cases
after case, these people are saying they got the cold shoulder from
Sanderson. Not one received satisfaction.
Of course I found many recommendations, including yours, but I
read enough negative stories that I'll consider others first. It's a
shame. They seem to have good products, but service after the sale
is an important consideration.

Try a pair of coated Sanderson intermediates for your 65.
You'll love them.
