Clint,
I have to drive that car as soon as it's
together. You understand that, right? <g>. I'll have to keep my foot out
of it the best I can for sure. I'd hate to spill gears all over the road. But
then again, my insurance includes flat bed tows... right Alex??
I know what you mean about the gearing. With that
first gear at 3.11, I could run much higher rear end ratios for better mileage
without being slow out of the hole. Too bad.

with my 396??
Might not be a bad idea to replace that Saginaw
before venturing out on the road,Larry. Those things were designed for
engines less than 250hp. Your 450hp BBC will certainly grenade it,in due
time. That open rear will help it survive, though right rear tire life will
be short.<g>
My 69 had a Saginaw 4spd in it when I bought
the car. It's a shame they aren't stronger because I like the gear
spreads.

Clint,
I now have an open 10 bolt with 373 gears.
I'm rebuilding a Saginaw 4 speed to put in for now, which has a 3.11 first
gear. I would like to replace both before summer so I can drive to
Chevellabration or the Power Tour. My Chevelle budget is almost down to
zero right now, so I have to live with what I have. I would love to put in
a 5 or 6 speed tranny and a better rear end soon.

Looking at those numbers, that engine looks
a little high strung. It should easily spin to 7K rpm.
What kinda gear you running in
back,Larry?

I got:
442hp @ 6000rpm
467fp @ 4250rpm
I hope to get better numbers after it's
in the car and we can work with the carburetor some. The guy running
the dyno took my carb off and put a custom job that was on the shelf
on my engine and picked up 17 more horses without any tweaking
(469hp). I just can't afford custom stuff like that
though.
BTW, I forgot to mention I'm running L78
heads. Although I did get the heads rebuilt, I did not have any
porting or polishing done.
