Well, there is a site (mine <g>) that lists all 64-72 Chevelle trim code (as well as engine suffix codes, rear end, etc.) and how to decode a VIN in general for each year. See http://www.chevellestuff.com, select a year and go for it.
As far as SS vs. non-SS designation goes it depends on the year(s) involved. Since you ask about a 70, I'll restrict it to that year. The two SS options, RPO Z25 (396) and RPO Z15 (454) were available OPTIONS (just like A/C, P/S, or a radio were options) on the Malibu sport coupe and convertible as well as the Custom El Camino. There was no specific series for the SS as there was from 1964 through 1968, in 1969 the SS became an option. A 'true' SS would have one of these two RPO codes and one of 4 big block engines - the L34 396(402)/350, the L78 396(402)/375, the LS5 454/360 or the LS6 454/450. Only Canadian-built 70 Chevelles put one of the two RPO codes on the trim tag to designate them as options purchased - U.S. built SS Chevelles (again, talking 1970) had no such indication that's been verified. Other than having the original (not restamped) engine block, a build sheet, a protect-o-plate, or some other form of documentation, there's NO way to tell if a 70 Malibu/Custom El Camino was born a SS car. The SS option(s) included some other equipment such as dual exhaust, domed hood, black-accented grille, power discs, rally wheels, wheel opening moldings, bumper pad, bright engine accents, and special chassis features along with the round pod dash. Many of these items could probably have been ordered on a standard Malibu as well and since many are cosmetic in nature it's relatively easy to build a 'tribute/clone/fake' (pick a name) today. Also, what is the designation of a true SS vs. a regular Chevelle coupe? Thank you, John Nasta
