I just realized that the answers to questions like this may become obvious after I've had a chance to look at the car. I was mainly thinking about the top trim pieces that only Malibus have, but I just looked at my '69 and I see how you can reach in and get to things that are fore or aft of the inner fender.

Thanks Rick. I already bought the Liquid Wrench and the car is nestled away in NJ. I just got back. Sunday will be my first day to spend any time working on her.

Do fenders get painted first and then installed? Seems like it would be too hard to get the trim on otherwise. Would you test-fit everything, then take it off and paint it, then put in on for real? I'm probably going to have to tear down the whole nose and replace the inner fenders with metal ones. One of the plastic ones is badly cracked. While I have the fenders off I'll see how they look in the back and whether I can get good results with patch panels or if I will need new fenders.
