I do need to have some welding done on the body. There is a body mount tower on the front left corner that is rotted around the bottom where the mount bolts to it. I also need to have a crack in the left rear frame rail welded. It cracked at the body mount location. Somebody welded a piece of heavy band iron to the bottom and it is holding it from falling off, but the crack goes all the way to the top and it is not fixed properly. There is also a lot of rust on the frame back there, so I would like to be able to wire wheel & Corroseal it. I painted the trunk pans above and below this past weekend and the stuff was extremely easy to use. I also chose Corroseal over the others because it is water based and non-toxic.

John,

In my case, the doors were on but the interior was completely out. In
hindsight, taking the doors off would have made it much easier. If you can
take the body off in the garage or someplace like that where you can leave
it on blocks while you work on the chassis, you can take your time and do it
right. I would suggest though that if you are considering doing bodywork
under the car while the chassis is out of the way, I would make sure
whatever you use to support the 4x4s are solid and stable.

Ah yes, the steering. Forgot about that. I guess I could separate it at the
rag joint.

Interesting to know that it is light enough for two guys to lift. Did you
have the interior out?

I need to have some welding done on the left frame rail right at the rear
body mount location, and also on the body mount tower on the front left
corner. I really don't want to put this car back together with rot problems
at 2 body mount locations.

John,

The last time I did it, we had three guys including me. With the front end
clip removed, I made two stacks of cement blocks just behind the firewall,
one on either side of the car, then had the two guys lift the front of the
body high enough for me to put an 8 ft long piece of 4x4 across under the
body on top of the two stacks of blocks. I then repeated the process on the
back side of the body. After that, I just rolled the chassis forward out of
the way.

The steering column, wiring harness, linkages, etc. will have to be cleared
out of the way first.

Hi guys,

Anybody know what the procedure is for lifting the body off the frame? I
just want to lift it high enough to swap out the body mounts and get a
welder into a couple of places, and paint it with Corroseal and some kind of
top coat. The engine, transmission, driveshaft, fuel tank, and exhaust are
all out, and the whole nose is off. What else would I need to take out or
disconnect aside from the body mounts? Also, is there a chart anywhere that
shows the locations of the body mounts in a 1970 Malibu coupe?

If anybody knows of a good deal on a solid frame that I wouldn't have to pay
a fortune to transport (i.e. not far from southern NJ), I'd consider that
too.

Thanks,
John Nasta
