I guess I'm missing something. How does that find the leak?

That can be a leak at the header. With no spark, there is no explosion, and no big puff out the header. When the noise is happening, put a few foot long piece of heater hose or similar tubing all around the header flange and follow that pipe to the collector. If there is an exhaust leak, you can find it that way really easily. I have had them before and thought it was a lifter until I found the header leak.
