The hose works like a mechanics stethoscope. Any sound made near the end if the hose will be transmitted right to your ear. It makes it really easy to localize any engine sound. I guess I left out the part where you have one end of the tube up to your ear and the other end all around the header flange and tubes!

That can be a leak at the header. With no spark, there is no explosion, and
no big puff out the header.  When the noise is happening, put a few foot
long piece of heater hose or similar tubing all around the header flange and
follow that pipe to the collector.  If there is an exhaust leak, you can
find it that way really easily. I have had them before and thought it was a
lifter until I found the header leak.
