I've used a few different ones including rattle can, primer/surfacer, and a primer/sealer.  The primer sealer is the best way to go in my opinion for it's adhesion properties and the fact that it doesn't trap moisture unlike regular primers that are porous and allow moisture to get to the bare metal.   Tom
