I guess I shouldn't be that harsh on Herd's book. There is some good info in the book, however there are a multitude of entries in that specific book that have been proven to be inaccurate.

That book is riddled with inaccurate information. Don't use that book as a reference for anything Chevelle.
 
 There definitely is no clamp on the rear springs of 68-72 Chevelles.

My chevelle is a 1968.  If you or others want I can scan a picture of the page out of my book that has it in it.  The name of the book is "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide" by Motorbooks.  It doesnt state any where that the "clamp" isnt used in 67-72's.  It is just labled "Chevelle Rear End Suspension.  Interesting.
