Where are you getting it from? most of the shops include flexplate and
balancer with the 383 crate engine although some of them say 'need externally
balanced flywheel for manual trans' ...so it shoudln't be an issue for your
automatic...
a 383 uses a 350 block, all accessories should bolt up... however, "NOTE:
Distributor with melonized steel gear MUST be used with long blocks and partial
engines with steel camshafts, or engine damage will occur. We recommend HEI
distributor P/N 93448806"

If I went with one of those I would make sure I got the aluminum heads and
w/373s you will want at least 6000 rpm redline... ..if going lo rpm torquer (5k
redline) then 331's...how big are rear wheels/tires?

In any case the 6.0L LS2 364/440 would be my first choice

6 bolt main Alumium block and heads w/6000+ rpm redline... and no apparent top
on the horsepower "curve"...plus weight savings compared to iron block 4 bolt,
I would not be surprised to be able to get front wheels off the ground with 373
gear and lite weight front wheels, non-ac car and one of these..

I don't think that the flex plate & balancer will work. Its been a while,
but isn't the 383 the result of using a small block 400 crank in a 350 block?
If so, the 400 was externally balanced & used a different balancer &
flexplate. But its been many years since I looked at a 383 and the GM 383
might be using new parts that were not available back then. I'd call a
vendor, Scoggins Dickey comes to mind www.sdpc2000.com and ask specifically.
Or wait for the correct answer from someone else on the list.

The distributoe will defineitely work.

Chuck,

All of your parts should swap directly. Unless you have a fancy, expensive
water pump, you might want to get a new one.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Swappable

I am attempting to decide which engine I am going to swap for my existing
350ci. I am considering the GM Crate 383ci 405hp partly because it comes
short some parts. Will the following parts from my 350ci work on the 383ci,
MSD distributor, water pump, flex-plate, and harmonic balancer. I already know
my headers will fit and I have a good working carb. I can use. I think the 350
and the 383 are the same block with just a different bore and stroke (probably
not quite that simple)in which case these parts should be interchangeable. The
one I am the most uncertain of is the distributor. If the parts are not
interchangeable I will then probably have to go with another 350ci that I can
use these parts on. Would be nice to have the extra power of the 383ci though.

Currently I am having a upgraded 700R4 transmission installed with a 2400 rpm
lock-out converter along with either 3.55 or 3.73 gears (will make that
decision in the next couple of days) including having posi. installed.
I think this combination should match up well with the 383ci, or if I have to,
any of the 350ci crate engines.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I should have waited until Christmas, but it's too late now. I guess I will
just have to look at it as a early Christmas present to myself that the wife
doesn't know about. Oh! Oh! Another bad boy. Our cars do seem to get us in
trouble once in a while in one way or another don't they?
