I don't remember asking for anyone in specific. I just told them I have a
19xx Chevelle and want to get a 'Restoration Kit'. If memory serves,
sometimes that person took the info and sometimes they transferred me to
someone to take my information.

Dale...........

What Department do you ask for when you call the 800 number so you can
get to the right person for the restoration kit?

Thanks,

These 'GM Restoration Kits' are FREE from GM and contain photocopied
pages various specs, options, colors, color combinations, Power Teams,
height, weight, etc. The contents vary depending on the year. The
last 'kit' I got was about 6 months ago but the phone number should
still be good. Call the Customer Assistance hotline at 800-222-1020.
Have your VIN handy as they more often than not ask for it to ensure
you get the right information kit. I'm sure they have kits for other
divisions than just Chevrolet but I've never asked.

So far I've gotten kits for 1965 through 1972 Chevelles (I head 64 is
not available but haven't tried) and even a separate one for my 67 El
Camino plus one for a 1974 Corvette I had. I would guess the El
Caminos are separate as the other year's kits didn't have much on
them. On a whim I called them with my Elky VIN and got a separate
one. Not much, but El Camino specific.

As far as I know (and I don't see how they would), they don't check to
see if you really own the car you're supplying the VIN for - just don't
get greedy all at once and ask for 10 kits. I think it's more a check
for a valid VIN so you get the correct year/series information. After
all, a Chevrolet (Impala/Caprice) kit would be different from a
Chevelle or Camaro kit.

Delivery time varies but I've gotten them in 7-10 days. May not have
everything you would like (never does though), but there's some good
information and it's free.

This is not the same as verifying your car with all its options that is
available through GM of Canada and charges for the service. You can't
'verify' your car and its options via this free kit.

Hi Dale,

I have a 70 Chevelle Malibu and noticed in the email you wrote to Jimmy
something about a free "Restoration Kit" from GM.

My car as I am sure most of everyone's who is on the list is a ongoing,
never ending project, could you tell me exactly what that is or
curtails, if it would be available for my car, and if it is how would I
go about getting one for my car?

Thanks,

I'd give the new springs a chance to settle first. Your 'old' springs
were 36 years old and probably lost a lot of tension.

There is no such thing as small block or big block springs from 1969
on. Both the front and rear springs were determined by the weight of
the car based on options ordered. Springs were listed by cutoff
length, wire diameter, total coils, deflection rate and ride heights
although a lot of aftermarket companies list them with different
engines, with our without A/C, heavy duty (whatever that is) and
combine a lot of different original springs (34 different front springs
for 72) into a manageable group of maybe 6-8 different springs in their
inventory. A free 'Restoration Kit' from GM for a 72 will list all the
springs by part number and broadcast code. It'll also show the factory
ride heights for different models - regardless of engine or accessories.

I am looking for suggestions/advice on lowering the front end of my
"72" chevelle. origonally a small block car, I swaped in a big block
and liked the stance with the small block springs but didnt like when
the header flanges bottomed out. I installed bbc springs and now I
think the front is to high. I can lower it via springs or spindles and
am looking for pro's and con's for both. thanks, Jimmy. C
