Cat food is extreamly high in protein and hard for especially chi's but dogs in general to digest, if cat food becomes the main diet, the high protein content will eventually cause kidney problems.   My mother's datson's kidneys shut down completely, but he was fed a steady diet of cat food at lunch meat.  I too have had the reverse problem with the cat wanting to eat the dog food more than the cat food, the vet told me that dog food was too high in ash content, not sure what that is or why dogs need it and cats don't but she also said that dog food was much higher in fat than cat food, to that end, the cat still eats Molly & Levi's dog food, he's has free roam of the house, not much I can do.  I will attest to the fact it's higer in fat though, as he has become a VERY big kitty. LOL   Anyway hope this helps.
