Hello, First let me take a moment to welcome any new members. I apologies for not doing so earlier. I just lost my uncle on Monday in a very bad car wreck and his funeral was today and needless to say, it has been a rough week for my family and I. I have so many emails, that I pretty much had to just go through and delete the majority of them. However, I am responding to this one because Lacey requested it :-) The size of the sir really is not so much as important as the sizes behind the sir. A big sir could very well throw small pups, and vice versa. So don't automatically assume the worst just because the sir is big (although naturally, you wouldn't want to purposely breed a big sir to a small dam). Normally, when there is only one or two pups, it is because there was only one tie. If any one plans to breed, they should attempt at least two ties, 2 days apart. This helps increase the possibility of more pups, which in turns, usually increases the likely hood the pups will be smaller. Chis are prone to needing c-sections anyhow. When you throw something like a large pup into the equation, you are increasing the likelihood that a c-s will be needed. I agree with your vet that if there is only one pup, it is better to be safe than sorry and plan for a c-s. Your chi could deliver naturally, but why take chances? I have had natural births with only 2 pups, and it went pretty smoothly, but I was a nervous wreck! If I knew for a fact there was only 1...I don't think I would put myself or my chi through that.
The fact that you are not experienced with breeding chis in the first place, makes it even more dangerous. I have been breeding chis since long before chis were popular, but even I would be nervous if one of my small chis was carrying only 1 pup. Then again....depends on the size of the chi! If one of my big ones (7 or 8 pounders), was only carrying one...I would probably let it go naturally, but wouldn't recommend it for someone who isn't experienced. Well, I don't know if I have made any sense here...I am not thinking to clearly right now. But I hope it was somewhat helpful. Best of luck and let us know what the x-rays show.
