i didn't do this for their whole lives just up till i noticed that they didn't go as often.  imo, it depends on the dog. some dogs get it quicker than others. i've housebroken dogs in as little as a couple of months and as long as over a year.  all of this is just my opinion, of course.  :-)

That does make sense to "potty" puppies a lot when they are very young like you do. They get the idea of going outside.  Sometimes, I read posts of people doing this with older puppies.  I am by no means a great potty trainer, but when puppies are constantly taken out it is more that they have their person trained and with that many times being taken out, of course, they are going to do almost all their potties outside.  This shouldn't be necessary and with that one gal with the 3 very small children it's hard to do.  The pup/dog does need to get on a schedule of sorts and have a little discipline in waiting a bit for those potties times.  It's like suddenly the dog just "gets" the whole potty outside/ on a pad idea.
