I've been reading through all the posts...trying to catch up, and I think a chi sounds perfect for you!  I see you've gotten lots of good advice, too.  I don't a chi would have the digging problem your other dogs did, but since a chi will be smaller be sure there aren't any odd gaps in your fencing like around where the gate is installed.   Litter training is great.  If you travel a lot it may be especially great for you.  I never liked traveling, and being in a hotel, and having to take a dog outside, at night, in some strange city.  There are many ways to litter train.  If you do a web search there would be lots of articles on how to do it.  For a search try: litter training puppies.  Then try other search words like that.  All pets are great for keeping stress down and well being, etc. =)  The very special thing with chis though, and other toy breeds, is that they can be pretty fragile health wise as small puppies.  I wouldn't advise someone new to chis to get a pup under 10-12 weeks.  12 weeks would be best.  If you go back through the posts just in this one group you will see lots of examples why.  The younger the pup the more chance you are to end up struggling with the very life threatening hypoglycemia.  With the chance of hyoglycemia and the stress of changing homes, I think leaving pup with his breeder and mama dog and getting chi puppies a little bit older than the norm give the pup a much better start in their new home.  Be very selective of the breeder you do get new puppy from.   If you do a web search on that too, you may find there are some very good breeders closer to you than you may think. =)
