Sandi, that's the same thing that I was finding when I was looking for a puppy. They told me they used CKC or APRI because it's cheaper to register with them than it is to register with AKC.

This has been so interesting that I looked that up.  Here is the AKC litter registration fee:
 

A litter fee is comprised of two parts: a processing fee of $25.00 plus a puppy fee of $2.00 per live puppy (multiply the total number of live puppies by $2.00).That is not a lot of money.

Continental Kennel Club (ckc) is free it appears for puppies but look at this:

 

2.Dogs over 6 months of age which have no previous Registration history may be registered by providing 2 witness signatures attesting to the purebred status of the dog along with 3 photos (front,left and right) of the dog to confirm it is ‘of proper breed type’ as defined by our current CKC Registration Rules and Regulations.  Canine Registration Applications are available in PDF format from our web site. (click here
