dew claw that grew back
If you have ever seen chi's running in tight circles, that is why
you would want them removed. Any dog going full out leans when it
turns, and when they lean that dew claw can dig into the dirt, if
you think removal hurts try stripping the cover off that dew claw, leaving
only the blood supply. Has happened to my greyhounds more that once
because my Vet would only remove the claws when he had to knock her out
for som ething else. My chi had his done as a puppy and most
of the big dogs breeders do theirs as a matter of course. Anna

There
is text below in case someone wasn't following this... I don't see
that dew claws or dew claw removal is even in the AKC chihuahua standard.
I'm assuming then it can be either way AKC wise with Chis. I don't
know why anyone would ever want to remove the front dew claws if that's
true (unless they were super floppy) If done on a pup, there is no
anesthesia and it's snip snip. Ouch and why? If done with a
spay, it's still going to hurt afterward. There is a bone in there
and that would be pretty ouc hy after. (am I right on the vet would be
cutting bone?) I did see on say Scottish Terriers, the AKC standard
is that "they MAY have dew claws" That would mean either way.
Here is the AKC standard link if anyone wants to figure this out for me,

Does
anyone know if i have to worry about
this? I bought
her from a breeder that is like 2 hours from here and
I'm not even
sure what vet she used. I don't re ally care as long as it
doesn't bother
her which it doesn't that i know of she never licks it
or anything?
My opinion would
be if it doesn't bother her and it doesn't bother you just leave it be.
=)My lovely Sophie has both her front dews. Lots and lots of toy
breeders don't even removethe front dew claws. Dew claws are more
a problem in the working breed dogs. Hunting dogs could easily snag
and rip a dew claw working a field, etc. Some people feel a toy dog
could snag a dew claw on say shag carpeting, but I don't think many people
have that in their homes anymore. If the dew is kinda floppy, one
may want to have it removed. If it were to become a nuisance, you
could have it removed when she is spayed or had any surgery or a dental.
I say what the heck, though. =) katie
