I would never crate my girls for so long unless it was a one-time emergency.  May I suggest as an alternative using a baby gate to block off a room with a non-carpet floor, like the kitchen or a bathroom?  Also, while your dog may be able to wait 9 hours to go pee (which I doubt), to expect a puppy to do it on a regular basis is probably too much, so I would teach your dog an acceptable indoor alternative.  My girls use pee pads.  They're handy, it's easy to throw one in my purse when I take them somewhere to visit, and if you buy them on eBay, they're cheap.  Something to bear in mind -- If you take your baby lots of different places with you, not every place you go will have somewhere where you can walk a dog!  I take my girls pretty much everywhere they're permitted, and when I'm at a hotel, it's really great to just plop down a pee pad and not worry about accidents or having to get up in the middle of the night, put on harnesses and leashes, and walk a dog in a strange place.  My girls sleep in bed with me at night, and at the foot of the bed is a chest with a pee pad taped to the top (so it won't skid).  No waking up in the middle of the night to take my girls out.
