thanks, Marsha. Machi (full name is Teeny Tiny Machi - from what
I've read, I suspect the Teeny Tiny is the breeder's "call signal?) has only
been with me since last Wednesday (November 8, 2006) and I need to do some
detective work.
He has Purebred certification from CKC, but the gal who first (I'm
assuming) bought him sold him to a young man who (I'm assuming)
thought he'd get rich as a backyard breeder.
He told me that he had a female and bought the male 4 months ago.
They had one litter of two pups (which he sold for $300 each "since they
didn't have papers."). He said that with the 4 dogs in his efficiency he
didn't like cleaning up the pee and poop and he didn't want any more
dogs.
He advertised on Craigslist. No heath records whatsoever. He
said he never took the dog for shots. I paid $350...thinking
I got a pretty good deal (even if I did have to borrow the money from my ex!)
although I have never paid for a dog before!!
So, on Sat. I take Machi to the vet for check-up and part of the shots -
since he's so small (4.3 lbs - he will be on on 11/18). That was
$100, which included the first month of the HMO membership and TWENTY DOLLARS
for a 2" (including cap!) tube of eye medication cos he has
conjunctivitis. I was OK with the $100 especially since it
appeared that I had gotten a healthy dog.
Then I moseyed over to the Vetsmart side of the store and signed up for
the obedience class starting Dec. 1st. $99...Again, not bad for 8
weeks.
By the time we had stopped at the drugstore to get Benadryl for the
possible reaction and I got him home and served his dinner, I couldn't believe
my eyes. His whole body was covered in bumps - about a nickel-size in
diameter.
Of course, the vet was closed by then, so I had to call the emergency
number and told them he was having more than just a small reaction. She
said to bring him in cos he could stop breathing and that the fee was $100
plus whatever was done to him.
As I drove him, the poor fellow was having a coniption. He was
squirming and trying to get away. Just wanted to jump out of his
skin.
$264 and about an hour later, he was better. They gave him 3
shots (I held my ears and closed my eyes and cried - he'd already had a couple
of needles and his bum reamed during his check-up)" Cortisone, Benadryl. and
????? plus gave me Prednisone (cortisone) half-tabs to give
him and then taper it down (read in yesterday's paper about a dog whose vet
didn't give him instructions on weaning him off cortisone).
So, I have an allergic dog. Bummer. The emergency vet said,
in future will have to give one at a time to see what he's allergic to.
He had the rabies, bordatella, distemper/parvo.
As far as potty training. The previous owner had apparently crate
trained him, but we've had several accidents. Like... I let him sleep
with me (I LIKE sleeping with a dog on each side) and he peed on my bed the
first night. After thatI put him in his new bed (which he loves) that is
inside his large crate that sits on the bed. My other dog, Canela (the
face of a Golden, the ears of a Spaniel, and the body of Miss Piggy) 22 lbs,
sleeps snuggled up with me most of the night.
I put the crate on the back deck during the day and he loves to climb
into his bed. However, he got really happy and excited when I brought
the crate in last night and put it on my bed. Hmmmmm, just thought of
something. I got married last December (3rd time - but he first proposed
24 years ago!) and hubby lives in New Orleans. No room for a man AND a
crate in my bed! When Lou comes to Miami, Canela sleeps on the couch and
sneaks in when whoever opens the door first. Charley would sleep either
on the bed or in his bed on the floor of our bedroom. Lou KNOWS that the
dogs come first.

Seriously, any man who said to me, "It's me or the dogs." As they
say, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out."
Machi hasn't got regular potty hours. Took them both out at
midnight, but he didn't do anything. At 3:30 am, he woke up making
desperate noises. Took him out and he peed. Got back and settled
down to read (I'm wide away by then) and he almost immediately started whining
again and jumping around. I KNEW that I wasn't going to allow him to
train me to let him out when he whines, but after a few minutes I took him
outside again (this is now about 3:50 am) and he pooped. So, at least
I'm getting to know his signals. We are communicating!!
But he still has accidents in the house (fortunately, tiled
everywhere). When he pooped on the back deck, that was an improvement
but when, afterward, he pooped inside it was gratifying to see that he pooped
right in the middle of a paper towel that had floated to the floor
somehow. Don't worry, y'all. I praise the good stuff and ignore
the accidents.
The background is that my dearest Charley (black, long-haired Chi/Pom)
crossed over the Rainbow Bridge about 4 months ago. I still cry for
him. In fact, I was crying over Charley when I brought Machi home.
I'd dreamed with Charley about 10 days ago.
I was worried that Canela might be jealous and aggressive to the wee one
but I think Machi is most definitely the Alpha dog. He sometimes growls
when she comes near. The very first night I had Canela on my lap and
Machi on my chest. They both need to know that we are all stuck with
each other, so might as well get along.
I know Canela is a fat, old broad, but to Machi she is a
WOMAN. Poor Canela was trying to sleep the first night and Machi kept
going up to sniff her private parts. Finally climbed to the top of my
pillow and turned her rump out of his reach. Things are back to
normal with Machi in the crate tho still on the bed with us.
There are two areas I need to research. First, the whole stud
service thing - maybe I can earn back the almost $800 I've spent so
far...oh, and that doesn't include the bed, coat, toys etc. etc. heh
heh
The other is Therapy Dog service. When I take him out everybody
goes crazy. OOOOHHHH, he's sooo cute. Can I touch him? etc.
etc. I'd love to be able to take him to hospitals and senior citizen
homes. Just hope we do well in the doggie training. Charley and I
flunked, though he was properly toilet trained and knew "come" and
"sit." Wasn't too good with the "stay" bit, though.

Dogs in general are considered adults at the age of 1
year. However, the actual age of which a dog's personality, so to speak,
changes from that puppy one to the mature adult one, varies by breed. Larger
breeds tend to physically mature slower and mentally mature faster while
smaller breeds tend to do just the opposite. A large breed may continue to
grow for up to a year and a half, while a chi is probably as big as it is
gonna get by the time it is a year old. At the same time, a large breed has
more maturity at a younger age while a chi can often stay in that puppy
stage for 18 months or more...

Mach i (white w/fawn markings) is a 1 y.o. male...peed on my bed
the first night! so last night he was in his new
burgundy/gold bed in the crate on my bed. Started scratching
at 2 am...so took him/them potty.
Bought a magazine and need to do more reading...at what age are
they considered adults?
He is registered with CKC so now I'm checking into the stud service
thing.
