But the service dog everybody pictures is a huge German Shepherd, so
obviously size isn't the sticking point either. And I've certainly seen
plenty of dirty people in restaurants, and some very dirty practices by
people, especially children, in restaurants, that a dog couldn't even begin
to duplicate (especially since they couldn't get to a buffet anyway). My
point was that I couldn't imagine any *health code* objection that a
restaurant might make to dogs that couldn't already be applicable to (a)
service dogs and (b) human beings.
My *guess* is that the objection to dogs in general has nothing to do with
the health code; it's just that business owners believe that dogs could be
noisy, boisterous and disruptive (rather like some humans<G>). They don't
have any choice, Federally speaking, about service dogs but have no
incentive to allow them, either. I guess they just hope that service dogs
will be trained to behave. I'm continually seeing stories where service
dogs were illegally refused entry into stores, hotels, taxis and the like,
and the successful legal proceedings that followed.
I really don't understand the rationale behind the health code, though,
because we've already established that there's no health risk posed by dogs
that isn't already posed by service dogs, sick or dirty humans or
ill-behaved children, and those aren't barred by the health code. So . . .
