I read some howls are used as a communication to the lost so they could find their way back. Rein is letting them know where to find her LOL with a little punctuation at her bark! Your right its always very serious. How sweet!! Rein only howls like you described when someone comes in the front door and she's back in the bedroom and can't see who's coming. She does the normal barking and each stream of barks is concluded with her raising her head back and giving a short howl. It's cute! We haven't tried to get her to sing yet - maybe that would bring out more howls! We'll have to try!
