People use to use motor oil to treat mange all the time. That was before we
realized the dangers. Motor oil is poisonous and should NEVER be used. We have
come a long way in our canine knowledge.

My mom bought a toy poodle few years ago and he developed the same condition.
In PR where she lives people use used oil (from cars) and it work but I asked
her to use Frontline spray first and it worked very well! The one she bought
was Frontline spray (used for fleas and ticks) and it's sold in vet clinics.
The active ingredient is Ivermectin which is also used to treat menge, some
breeds can be suseptible to it.

There is an Indian legend which says when a human dies there is a bridge they
must cross to enter into heaven. At the head of that bridge waits every animal
that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based upon what they
know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridge.... and which are
turned away.

  Subject: [Chihuahuas] Question...

Hi, my name is Melanie and I am new to the group. My Husband and I just got a
baby Chihuahua (10wks old and just under 2 pounds) on Jan. 16th. We named our
new addition Maize (our little corn dog with big ears.. ha ha ha). She is a
fawn colored smooth hair, and is now going on 13wks and weighs just 2 pounds 10
ounces. We made sure right away that she was in good health and have been
keeping a watchful eye on her to be sure our little baby was as healthy and
happy as she could be. We have two cats (Azaziah,7yrs and Zoola, 6yrs) and we
always wanted a small dog. She likes to mess with her new sisters (the
kitties), but they are not too sure about her just yet, although, her and Zoola
sleep side by side on my lap everyday. Maize has such a calm, loving and
playful attitude. She barely ever barks, and impresses everyone that she meets.

My reason for the post, other than introducing myself and Maize, is that we
found out that there was a problem with our new little bundle of joy. We
noticed after a few weeks, that she itches a lot, and only in certain places. I
took her back to the vet right away, and she was diagnosed with Demodectic
Mange. She has very small areas of irritation, so we caught it early, but I was
still very upset at first, and am still extremely worried about her. I did some
research about it, and it says that it can often go away on its own in puppies,
but I don't want to wait and find out that it doesn't. My vet is currently
checking with a dermatologist about the best way to treat it on such a small
dog. I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem and if or how they
went about treating it. She is such a sweetheart, and I just want her to be
pain free as soon as possible so she can go on enjoying her life without the
distraction of her itchiness. I would love to hear your comments as well, Thank
you.

  Sincerely,

  Melanie
