I think he's inside right now which is a good thing. We are watching the yard
constantly to see how he is. We've decided to contact the authorities today if
we see anything that suggests he isn't being well cared for.

is the dog approachable? Can you check up on it? Maybe some water and some
blankets? I dunno, that's sad :( -- em

You sound like someone who really cares about this neighbor. Why dont you go
over and have a talk with him and see if maybe you could help him with the
dog...just explain to him it is very cold out and you understand he cant come
out in the cold to much and that maybe you could bring the dog in for him.Its a
way to make a new friend and care for the dog all at the same time.

with. Our next door neighbor is a somewhat reclusive elderly man who is quite
ill with a heart condition. He has a Husky/shepard mix that is basically kept
chained in the back yard. I know the man brings him in from time to time but I
think its more when he thinks to do it rather than when its necessary for the
dog to be out of the elements.

Yesterday, we had a bad ice storm and the Husky was, from what we can tell, out
all day and night. He had ice on his fur this morning. The temp. dropped to 16
with windchills of below 0 overnight. He does have a good sized dog house but
that only protects him from so much. I know Huskies are adaptable to cold
weather, but I think there must be a limit to what they can tolerate.

I know our neighbor really does care about this dog. But I doubt his current
ability for take care OF the dog. He is barely caring for himself at this
point. He was hospitalized in the summer for an extended period of time. His
brother stayed at the house to care for the dog. We talked to him because a
friend of our's really wanted a Husky and was interested in giving this one a
good home, if possible. The brother said that a love for this dog was the only
thing keeping my neighbor alive and refused to discuss the issue with my
neighbor or us.

My husband and children feel we need to contact someone who can be sure the dog
is ok and not neglected. My fear is that the dog will be taken from his owner
and put down. This will not only cause his death, but who knows what the loss
will do to the old man? I'm just torn, I don't want to make a bad decision that
can't be reversed.

My daughter wants us to take him in, but thats just
not feasible in anyway. I don't know how to reach the man's brother. And the
man will not answer the door, ever.

Thanks for any suggestions anyone might have.
