so only light chis have a merle gene? Dark chis cannot have a merle gene? I
am assuming the merle gene is recessive therefore can be in the genotype and
not in the phenotype. So why do only light chis have merle genes if it is not
necessarily in the phenotype? -- em

No, only light merles can appear as not being merles. Merle gene is a
dilute gene - meaning it lightens the coat in a splotchy pattern. With light
merles, it may be more difficult to tell that they are truly merles. That is
why
it is not advisable to breed lighter colored merles.
