i would switch him to a food that is completely corn-free. Corn is known to
trigger allergies in dogs. You may start there. -- em :)

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Allergies

Hello there, my name is Kara. I have a 4 month old Chihuahua named
Chip, and I am in need some advice. Chip is a very happy boy, but I
think he has allergies. Heres the story...About 2 weeks after we got
him, we were all outside, and I noticed the corner of his eye (tear
duct) was slightly swollen. I figured he either poked it or got some
sand in it (we have a large sandbox, and he absolutely loves running
and digging in it). Either way, I was worried. I took him inside,
gently flushed his eye, and put a warm washcloth on it. I had
planned on taking him into the vet the next morning, but
miraculously, it was gone when we woke up. About three days later,
it came back, but disappeared again before I could get him to the
vet. Then it re-appeared again (the same day), so I raced him to the
vet. The vet gave me come poly-bac (he thought it could possibly be
conjunctivitits), and also some ear medicine as he had a slight ear
irritaion. He also talked to me about the fact that it could very
well be cherry eye, and if after the seven day treatment it was
still there, to bring him back in, and surgery would be anywhere
from 350.00 to 750.00..... Well, the 7 days have passed and his eye
is the same, the medicine did nothing. I am now scheduling an
appointment with another vet (for a seccond opinion). Here's what I
am thinking. I noticed that Chip scratches ALOT!! I know he has no
fleas, I have 3 dogs, and they all are flea free. At first I thought
it was from his collar, so I removed it (it's been off for days) he
still scratches, he also itches his eyes (even the one without the
problem). Does anyone else think this could be allergies? He is
definately getting into the vet, but I am just worried sick. Every
time I feed him, or give him a bone, I am wondering if I am causing
the problem to worsen. I definately want to change his food, any
suggestions on what brand/type to use (something that can be bought
at Petsmart). Has anyone ever heard of a dog being allergic to
rawhide, chewing bones? This boy is a chewer, I would like to find
something else for him to chew on incase it is what he is allergic
to. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. I am sorry this is so long, I
am a very worried parent.

Kara
