I free feed mine. But i think it is what works best for you. Mine just eat a little at a time, and are not overweight or underweight.
I have an adult female chihuahua that is pregnant, a 3 mo old female chihuahua, a 2 pound min pin that is 4 mo old, and a 1yr old yorkie poo. All are females. The only one i pay special attention to feeding is my pregnant one because i want the puppies to be healthy. She get's to eat dry puppy food all day whenever she wants, and then every other day some canned puppy food.
