Do you have a dog door, or the ability to get one? If so I would strongly
recommend one. Then getting an xpen to put around it (it's like a portable
fence - Petsmart and Petco have them). Then you put their bed, food and
water and toys in there. They like their living area to be clean and not a
bathroom so they won't go in there - keep the xpen area without a lot of
free carpet at first - a little is okay. I put those bathroom throw rugs
that are backed with rubber in there that you can throw in the washer - and
if they go potty, it doesn't go through. She shouldn't go in there though
because it's "home." She's going in your home, because it's so big, she can
go in places away from where she eats and sleeps. I would keep her in the
xpen whenever you are not directly supervising her or when you think she
needs to go. Since she won't go where she eats and sleeps, it will force
her to go outside to potty. It will make your life a lot easier. Also, at
my house, when mine were training, we put up a baby gate in the hall way
that led to the bedrooms - so when they were out, they were stuck in the
main part of the house where we could keep an eye on them easier. Then of
course, the dog door and xpen should be in this area of the house too. Ours
is in the great room / kitchen area, and we baby gate the hallway off.

I have acquired a 1 yr old, female chi who thinks any carpet is where
she should do her business. I leave her outside, she runs around,
comes in and does her business on the carpet! She can be out all day
and save it for the carpet! I'm tired of cleaning up... any
suggestions are welcome.
