Oh, I forgot to say the other good thing about the bathroom rugs, is they
make little traffic "dirt" marks where they run in and out of the dog door,
so it's nice to be able to throw them into the washer.
Ours are older now and can have the run of the house when were around, but
we still use the xpen when we are at work. We also still use the baby gate
in the winter, because our really small chi doesn't like to go outside when
it's cold out - so we can watch her better.

xpen whenever you are not directly supervising her or when you think she
needs to go. Since she won't go where she eats and sleeps, it will force
her to go outside to potty. It will make your life a lot easier. Also, at
my house, when mine were training, we put up a baby gate in the hall way
that led to the bedrooms - so when they were out, they were stuck in the
main part of the house where we could keep an eye on them easier. Then of
course, the dog door and xpen should be in this area of the house too. Ours
is in the great room / kitchen area, and we baby gate the hallway off.
