Okay...I've bred dogs before, and cats and rats...even done it myself once..
LOL..

But this is the first time I've owned the male dog and I'm a little unsure
of what's happeneing, supposed to happen, etc. Could someone please help me
with a little 101?

I have two females in season. According to the calendar, one should be
ready to accept the male today and the other on Saturday. He is interested
and seems to be making all the right moves. One of my females is the mother
of the other one, so one has had a litter (the one who should be ready on
Saturday). The daughter is a "virgin" but should be ready today.

He has made advances toward the daughter and she backs up to him with her
tail cocked to the side, but when he tried to tie, she screamed like he was
killing her! She broke the tie and the poor fellow's...well...thing...was
still very distended. He kept looking at it like..."what am I supposed to
do with it now?" I was clueless but I felt bad for the poor guy. I know
that sometimes you need to hold the female to keep her from pulling on him
like that, but I didn't get across the room quick enough.

Did something bad happen? Did it go as it was supposed to? How long do
they generally stay "tied" once they are together? Does the male "retract"
when he's done or is that normal that it should be distended like that
afterward?

Thanks...sorry for all the questions.
