I don't really know if the real dog whisperer talks to the animals BUT your personality communicates with them in a " way" that others do not have the ability to do. You are compassionate about your animals. I would have saved the turtles too. These little animals, as well as our chi's, cannot fend for themselves. How cruel of people to be abusive to them.
