No bashing here Marsha. I asked out of curiosity and I know several breeders who don't use bigger female chi's. And according to them the reason they don't is because you can't better the breed using bigger chi's. You won't always know what you get. I am not a breeder and never would be but I was curious and I asked. Thanks for all of your replies

I made a comment on another group about the fact that breeders often use females over 6 pounds but produce pups under 6 pounds....I am getting a lot of bashing for that.....so I am wondering, how many of you actually use over 6 pound females for breeding? Marsha I do and prefer it. I only have 1 under 6lbs and have not decided if I'll chance it. I have a few girls over 6 lbs and they are my best moms when it comes to delivery. Mine are 4-6.5 pounds.. my male is 3.5 pounds.. I have several that are 6-8 lbs,MOst have thrown me pups in the3-6 lb range Not on this group you will not 90% of my girls or 6-8 lbs. I all ways sell smaller and keep the bigger. They will produce same size and quality pups. And bigger girls less problems whelping, more milk and more pups. Studs I of course keep the smaller as males or easy to come by even top quality if a fault that keep them from show ring. We have couple over 6 lbs and so far all have been under six from breeding them except one. MANY MANY MANY show breeders use female over 6 pounds .. they just don't talk about it ................................I can send you a list of Well known Chihuahua breeders with many champion that have girls over 6 pounds and finished champions over 6 pounds ... they do their darndest to finish them before the get to large ......AS long as the females are of good type and sound .. there is no reason not to breed a bigger girl ............But its always best to breed her to the best male you can find .... I prefer the girl to be bigger too for safety reasons. I have some females that are over six pounds. They throw big and small in the same litter. well to me that is to big i dont like a female over 5 lbs that has always been my preference and i wont breed anything under 3.5 pounds i will probably get bashed for this but my girl is a deer chihuahua and she has not needed a c-section and has delivered one and also 3 babies i have a 3.5 and a 4.8 pounds girl and a 3 lbs male I think to each their own in this area. If your going for the AKC standards though they have the weight set from 2-6lbs I believe. So again, to each their own, as I do pet only and maybe one day show. Its all up to GOD. They are all beautiful and gorgeous and precious in my eyes. We have 2 over 6 lbs, but I generally prefer them to be bigger anyway. I feel better breeding the bigger girls but I do know that they can have problems also, just more comfortable with the bigger girls. With the proper male (background and all for size) you can get some really awesome pups. I genuinely believe some breeders have them over 6 lbs but won't admit it for some reason (I guess embarrassed that they aren't within the AKC standards). I do all the time. I like the 6 to 7 lb size because they have less trouble on a whole when it comes to whelping. Yes there are some pups in the litter smaller and some big. I tell people I don't know if the smaller ones will free whelp. I also usually have big litters and I don't want to risk the uterus bursting because I keep a smaller one. Marsha, Most of my girls are larger than 6 pounds. I try to always breed my girls larger. I am however downsizing on them a little bit. I have that I get an array of puppies in small sizes to large. I have also been very lucky to have had only one c section. Dixie runs about 6 ½ to 6 ¾ but a lot of that is due to muscle as I was running her in rally and agility. But then I like my Chis to be at least 5 pounds. Just my preference. I have heard of a lot of different folks using bigger females. I have also heard them get grief about it from some show folks. I think its one of those things that are done but not talked about, and some who do it will not admit to it. i do use some who are over and i agree with you. but i have learned never to tell people that. i have been bashed more times than i can count for things like this. i agree that it is safer to use them but others consider it unethical breeding and say you are breeding out of standard.
