I'm no chi expert but Pecos had long strands of hair emanating from the tips of his ears when he was very young. His mane came in pretty rapidly followed by a hilarious "poof" of white fur under his tail. THEN his tail started coming in. If your pup sports any of those attributes, suspect it's a long hair. Thinking back, Peco's photo at the breeder's site reflected the fact that he was a long-hair quite clearly. He was three months at the time. If there weren't long-haired chi's, I probably would have a papillon or some other fluff muffin. My other dog's a rescue with sort of shepherd/coyote fur. Sheds like there's no tomorrow. Furminate him constantly. Get him furminator baths and brush-outs at PetSmart. By rights, he should be
bald.

My little Pecos is a long-haired job, fairly fine and thin so far. He doesn't shed at all. We use a soft bristled brush to take it easy on his skin. Not much fur on his belly. His picture is in the gallery but he'd just rolled into the drink while on a walk so he's not at his best.

I think the long coats have hair like humans and the short hair is fur.

Emiliano lives indoors, he goes out to play for short periods of time, and to pottie. I brush him once a week and would you believe the short coats shed more than the long coats? The only issue is that when I bathe him, it does take longer to brush and dry him. Other than that, he's low maintenance.

BEAUTIFUL dog. Is it hard to keep up with his shedding? I see you have him outside. Is he an in and out dog? If "in" how do you keep up with his shedding?
I'm the newbie that has the little "twofer" dog. Nice short smooth coat on the top/hairless on the bottom!! (He's getting 'way better thanks to all y'all).
So with the longer haired chi's is it a problem?
And long coats have varying degrees of coat. Some have a sparse coat, some a medium coat (which I think is what Emiliano has) and some have heavy coats, a real fur ball!
