It will not make him worse, although a little diaherra can happen. It is important that you keep a good schedule when giving it and make sure you finish the entire prescription. Since you got him from the shelter, that means you don't know if he had all of his shots, especially Parvo. All shelters must give the rabies shot prior to release, but it is not mandatory for the booster shot. Did your vet run a blood panel to make sure he could rule out Parvo? If not, and if he says he doesn't know what type of respiratory disease he has , then I would suggest a blood test. I certainly would not give him a booster or any other shots while his immune level is so low now. As far as science diet dog food goes..it's not the top on my list either. Although the first ingredient is chicken, it does have wheat and soybean meal and a lot of dogs are allergic to both of those. I recently switched both of my dogs to Wellness Chicken Dry. Princess is a finicky eater and she dives into it. It is mostly all meat, which is what dogs are all about. They don't need grain fillers, like wheat, rice and soy. Usually if I switch Princess diet, even when I do it a little at a time she would always throw up and or get the runs. This didn't happen with the Wellness so I am sticking to it. Gigi has a bottomless pit, so she will eat anything and nothing bothers her. But one thing I did find interesting with Gigi is that when I rescued her she was on the Wellness turkey which also has a very fishy smell to it because of the salmon. She always smelled doggy and I couldn't stand the smell when she went to the bathroom. Not only that but when I emptied her glands it smelled fishy too. UCK! So since I switched her to the chicken and am also using Bobbi Panther natural puppy shampoo, from Petco,she doesn't have a doggy smell and she only needs a bath once a month. It has also gotten rid of the dry skin problem after two baths. This has got to be the 5th shampoo I tried on her and its the only one that works.
