Both my girls Dad is a long coat and they have no signs of long hair - infact Abbey has an almost bald tummy:) She said she was told that it is a 50-50 chance but she does not believe that. From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Christy Sylvest Sent: Thursday, November 04, 2010 3:45 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [Chihuahuas] Hi to all you Chi owners I believe that long coats are a recessive gene. Any chi with a long coat would have to have two long coat genes if they have one short coat gene they will be short coated. If one parent is a long coat they have 2 long genes. If the other parent is short coat with one short gene and one long gene their offspring have a chance of being either long or short depending on the gene they recieve. If both parents are short coat they would both have to have one short and one long gene to produce a long coat offspring. The type of long coat is also determined by genes but involves many more alleles. Here it is in pictures http://www.prouxchihuahuas.com/id61.html so a true long coat is just determined by genes. They have different types of long coats, some are thicker some are thiner and some have an undercoat where others dont that would be determined by the different alleles like the ones that determine coat colors and dilutes. Some Chis have folded ears...it doesn't mean they are mixed breed but it could. Merles are an allowed color, but there are some who don't think merles are pure bred. I have heard that merles should be out crossed meaning that you should not breed a merle to a merle because that can lead to some issues, but I do not breed merle so other would have better information on that. This is a great group of people with tons of knowledge. If you have any other questions before or after you find your new best friend this is a great forum to ask on. Good luck with your search. When I read about Chihuahuas they never say they have folded ears - but I see a lot of them - are they mixed breeds? I also have seen Merle dogs - in Dashounds they are not allowed due to health issues - is this also something to avoid? > > If you have tips about looking for a dog or anything we need to know about Chihuahuas that we haven't read about - please share. > > > > ------------------------------------ > > " Lets talk about our wonderful little f riends! > Join today!
