So happy to hear that Twiggy is okay, and nothing serious! Amanda, which
blend of Science Diet are you feeding her? If it is the standard one that is
corn based, or even if the 2nd ingredient is corn, then she will never gain
any weight because corn just runs through their system and doesn't offer any
nutritional value.

The Vets get paid a commission for selling it, so just because they sell it,
doesn't make it the best food out there. Their are many other natural foods
with a much better quality proteins, then SD. I would try different brands
too see what she really likes. Also, Nutra Cal does increase their appitite
and helps to replace vitamins and mineral that they loose from weight loss.

Well, the trip to the vet went OK. Twiggy had a complete blood work up and
all of her levels came back just fine. The vet was originally concerned
that maybe there was something wrong with her thyroid. That came back
within normal limits. So, we just need to put some weight on (she’s lost 12
oz. since September). I’m mixing a higher calorie food with her dry kibble
everyday when I feed her. It’s a science diet food carried by the vet.
She’s to return in 2 weeks for a weight re-check. I also brought up
concerns about Twiggy’s hair loss. She’s always had very thin hair on her
back ever since I picked her up at the rescue. I thought by now the hair
would grow back. It hasn’t so I mentioned this to the vet. She told me
that Chis with Twiggy’s coloring have some type of hormone that makes their
hair thinner in certain places. I had no idea that this was the case.
Twiggy is what is known as a blue chi. Has anyone else heard of this? So,
I’m putting fish oil in Twiggy’s food to help with her skin and hair.
Twiggy had a complete dental in September where the vet cleaned her teeth
when she was spayed and even pulled some of her teeth that were bad from her
grinding them on the kennel wire she was in while at the puppy mill. If
anything getting the teeth pulled made her feel so much better because she
didn’t have all that rot in her mouth anymore. I could tell a huge
difference in her eating habits after the teeth were pulled. It was like
she couldn’t get enough of her food, whereas before she just didn’t take an
interest in it. So, we’ll see how this works for her. She’s drinking water
just fine and her bowels and bladder movements haven’t changed. She’s just
tiny and skinny. I am curious to know if anyone has heard of the hair loss
on blue chis??

Hi Amanda!! I hope you are able to find out what's up with little Twiggy!!
May be time for a dental check too...I know for me if I don't ask my vet to
check, it isn't something he just looks at on his own. Might be a good idea
to ask for a dental if your vet is like mine! I know teeth issues can lead
to grumpy, non - eating chis!!!

Hello all,
Even though I don’t post here often most of you know of Twiggy, my 5 year
old Chi who is a puppy mill survivor. Over the last few days, I have
noticed that she’s not as active as she usually is, seems a little more
irritated with Jack, my younger Chi, and seems to be losing weight. She’s
always been a tiny girl, but seems to be more obvious to me now. I used to
say that she just carries all of her weight in the front, not on her back.
But, I’m concerned about it. Please send good thoughts and prayers to Miss
Twiggy girl. I’m sure everything is fine with her but I just need to make
sure.
