Some of the news media are calling it distemper/parvo. Guess they don't have their facts straight. I wish that shelter had a dog tested to verify which virus it is. My gut feeling is that it is Parvo, and hopefully not a new strain, like what happened 2 yrs ago in a lot of shelters. If it is a new strain, then they should be liable to tell the public because that means that the parvo shot any dog got 1-12 months ago isn't worth squat against a new strain.
These shelters should be held accountable for the treatment of the dogs, and not be allowed to Euth them either. With them adopting them all out like that, they are only spreading the virus. And they must have had more cases and deaths from it then they are telling the public, to be literally emptying out the entire shelter. Miami Dade had several cases last year and the year before and they admitted to Euthanizing the sick ones and it caused an uproar with the public. You would think that after all of that, they would smarten up and keep the shelter clean, and quarantine new nursing pups and moms from the other dogs. Very poor management! I also heard that a NJ shelter has an out break of Parvo. They too did not say which strain it is, which is so important. I think I am going to call my Vet and see if she has any updates on Parvo. If it is a new strain then we all need our dogs vaccinated again for it.
