I agree that so many dog allergies and stomach problems circle around to their food intake. When I met my husband he was one of those owners that think food is love and love is food and couldn't resist giving Jack bites of people food..lots of bites lol. Jack scratched and itched constantly with on and off stomach disasters. My dogs do not get people food at all and we had words about him sneaking them bites. I have finally got him to listen and Jack does not get people food now. And no foot licking and scratching till he has bloody spots and no gastritus. Yeah..

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. Up until April 2008, I lived with my Mom all the time. She passed away when we were in the process of moving to North Las Vegas. After her death I was consumed by family hatred and having to pack up a house and move to somewhere that I knew no one. I had severe respiratory allergies so for about three months I spent four days there packing some boxes, then coming here for four days unpacking what I brought; and then repeat. Once all of my stuff was here, I bought Dolly two days later. I don’t know how I would have made it without her. I talked to her like she was a person; she licked away my tears, and because she was sick when I got her, I helped her as she healed physically as she help me as I healed emotionally. About 15 months later, I saw that my spine issues were making it very difficult for
me to play with Dolly the way she should be able to play and that is where little Desi Lou came into the picture and our little family.
I have been attacked before about the food that I feed my dogs; about the special diet foods that my vet prescribes when they have a problem. If the food works for whatever it is supposed to do, that is good for me. If my vet prescribes it, and I trust my vet entirely, then it is good enough for me. Actually except for puppy food, both of mine have been on the same food for their entire lives. My vet is very impressed at how they thrive and also that they are not getting too much fat, etc. I know that from time to time food may need to be changed, but some people I know buy a different food every time that the bag is empty and then they call me up because they don’t know why their dog won’t eat, or why their dog is now vomiting or having diarrhea. I know the dog food that I use is healthy for them, and why change something that they are thriving
on. My neighbor actually feeds their dogs fresh bananas and something for breakfast, dog food for lunch, and homemade stew-type food for dinner. I know that has to be very hard on their stomachs, and once when she was gone she asked me to take the dogs out around 11 am to go potty. These dogs had the worst unformed stools – and boy did it stink, too! I don’t tell them that they aren’t supposed to do that…they are their dogs and perhaps that is what they want and they don’t see the negative effects from it. If I saw that they were leaving their dogs outside all day in the summer, I would have a few words with them, but their dogs are definitely well fed – perhaps too well fed because they are FAT.
Over the time that I have been a member I read about giving dogs human remedies for diarrhea and other things. I always pass these things by my vet, and they really don’t want them to be taking those things…diarrhea or constipation – 1 tsp pure pumpkin…and I can give it to them every day if I want. Once Dolly’s head got burnt from a piece of meat falling back into the crock pot and the juice bounced up and landed right on the center of the top of her head. I was told that time to use regular burn gel/cream. I inquired when Dolly was teething to see if I could use baby orajel…they said no – not been tested on dogs. I don’t want to be the one that has a dog that died because of using something that was not tested on dogs.
We all have and love our dogs, so we are all responsible for what they eat, what we give them when they are sick, and what kind of bones or toys we let them chew. None of us is going to do something that is known to be wrong…at least no one on this group.
I do like that I learn things on this group from others, and if I am worried about something, I will pass it by the group. We post about Chihuahuas but we also take time to inquire about someone who was sick, or something that has been keeping us from posting. It is a group about Chihuahuas – or should I say a group for Chihuahua owners. Over time the members are like your second family…and that is a good thing.

Thanks Joan! Agree 200%!! I think the thing I'm trying to stress is that the list should be a happy place where we can talk about our Chihuahuas and not worry if what we say is going to get slammed. It should be an all positive list. All too often I see some nasty disagreements on here! That's not what it should be about. We all love our Chihuahuas/dogs! I don't know about you but some of my friends don't get that; the adoration of my dogs so having a comfortable place to come to is wonderful! I've had purebreds, mixed and other. I simply love dogs! I'm extra found of Chihuahuas, obviously, but canines have a part of my soul overall! I lost my husband of 25 years 2 years ago this month and I can promise you if I had not had my dogs, I would never ever have survived. They are truly a lifeline and such a joy in my life. So many people don't understand that. Thanks for your email! Have a great weekend! Steph -------Original Message------- Well said, Stephanie.
As my vet says, my two Chihuahuas are doing very well, thriving on what they eat. He checks their teeth and everything else when I take them for a vaccine. Dolly was the animal hospital’s first ever ‘Pet of the Month’ and she won a bag of dog food. I had to take her for a vaccine a couple days later, and I asked him to take the bag of food and donate it to the local no-kill shelter because I really didn’t want to change what Dolly & Desi are eating. He said ‘yes, continue what you are doing because they are doing extremely well…good teeth, gums, coat, heart, etc.’
Now, I know that I don’t eat some things that other people eat. But that doesn’t mean that I am not eating good healthy food, just that my diet consists of different foods, but if they are keeping me healthy, then it is good. If someone else’s food (that I wouldn’t eat) is keeping them healthy, then it is good.
And, it really doesn’t matter if a Chihuahua is all, part, or none fennec fox…the important part is that they are loved, have adequate nutrition, and are not suffering any deficiencies.
