Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I can certainly relate to
almost every one of them - yes, he licks the floor/carpet after the "big kids"
- samoyeds - eat their dinner and cookies. And
our vet did suggest the pumpkin also; we just happened to have
the olive oil on hand and use it. Seems to be working so far,
no side effects. But it certainly is reason to keep a close eye
out for changes. I too have noticed that he likes to do lots of
licking before falling asleep - almost like a baby with a pacifier.
As for allergies, yes, he does have them. One is where he will
scratch constantly, gets real red, loses hair, and sometimes has
scratch marks on them. After working with the vet, we found out
that if we give him half a pill (I don't know the name of it)
once a day with his breakfast, he does just fine.

He needed the transfusions because his tummy had expanded so
much that it created an ulcer and he was bleeding from that.
After the surgery and lots of medication, that healed up just
fine. He is such a sweet, sweet, little guy - I was just torn
at the thought of maybe going home without him, he was that
sick.

Sorry to hear that Nikki had to all through that. Must have been
nerve racking for you. Why did he need blood transfusions?
I have often wondered about them getting hairballs too. I have a
Mini American Eskimo and when she gets done eating her biscuit,
Gigi, my chi will go over and lick and lick and lick the spot
where Princess ate her biscuit on the carpet. I have seen her
pass out Princess's fur on a couple of occasions. Even though
I do a quick vac every day, Gigi still seems to pass out
Princess's fur. I think what helps her to pass it out is because
I give them both Liperderm (omega oils) in there food a couple
of times per week. The Liperderm does seem to help reduce some
of the shedding for both of them and their fur has come in a lot
softer and thicker. I have to increase the amount per times
per week that they get it, in the winter, as I find that the
dry air in the house, is worse then there summer shedding.

I sure hope Gigi never gets a hairball. Also wishing Nikki a
speedy recovery the poor baby!
