It took a very long time with Desi. One day, I put him out on the patio, closed the door and then I watched through the window - I have solar shades so he couldn't see me. He must have walked circles around the patio and each time he got back to where the door is, he would put his feet on the step and wait. It took over 20 minutes that first time. The next day was not much better; but the third day, he wandered around the patio and then he stepped into the rocks and ran back to the door.he thought he got to come in and get a treat because he 'stepped in the rocks.' So I waited until he actually stepped in the rocks AND went potty. From there on, it got better. Now he will go out potty in the morning before he eats breakfast, and he cries at the back door after he eats his breakfast and Dinner.
I did come home today and I had a white towel rag on the floor.I was going to use it. Well.the towel had this very familiar looking yellow spot on it. I don't know how to stop him from marking all the toys.and I think that he thought the was claiming that towel too. I never see him marking, but Dolly does not do that. We just got another 2 year old chihuahua. He was scared to the point that we weren't sure he would ever accept our home but after 2 days (which is fast) he is happy as can be with us and our other chi. He was supposedly trained but I can't get him to go outside. He is a smart little guy but it's like he can't get a clue to go outside to potty. We have two others and take them all out - heap praise on them when they go and hope he understands but it just goes right over his head. We have a fire hydrant in front of our house which is loaded with doggie scents - so I took him out there - NO! He sniffed it all over and walked away. Took him for a walk - still nothing. I have caught him going in the house and immediately pick him up and take him to our doggie yard but nothing happens. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there a problem when they are 2 years old that they can't be trained as easily or at all? Gwen
