I was ready to tear my hair out with him. He is very food oriented and I could not be giving him treats all the time to go potty. I did try everything else before I did the 'stay out there until you go potty' thing. When he would come to the door he would get a treat. After several days when he figured it out that he was supposed to go potty, he would go out and go potty and he would not come into the house unless I had that treat. This continued for a week when I just decided that when I had the door open, I would show him the treat, and then toss it a little way in the house. He came in and ate it. About a week after that, I would open the door and he would come in, and I would just turn away like I didn't know that he was following me because he wanted his treat.I was not going to give him one the rest of his life. After that one day of ignoring.he goes out and goes potty, plays outside for awhile, lays with Desi on the patio chair or their cot bed, and he will even cry by the door after he finishes his dinner so he can go out and go potty. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Thanks, Joan. I think I have another Desi here. I just figured out this morning that as long as he can see me - he won't go. So, when I walked totally away - he did go in the yard and at least pooped after a long time pacing. I guess it will just be a long and patient road for the little guy. He is on his third day here and still very scared but doing so much better.
