OMG, I cannot hold back. *I* am "one of those people" and I have been fighting just as hard for the past 15 years to repeal and prevent any Breed Specific Legislation. The IGNORANCE being shown on this board is horrifying. The American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers WERE originally bred for pit fighting and bull baiting. They were NOT EVER bred to be human aggressive--- and, in fact, ANY "pit bull" (which is just a catchall term for the bull & terrier breeds) that showed human aggression was KILLED by its owner. Did you read that--- the HUMAN AGGRESSIVE DOGS WERE CULLED. The Little Rascals dog was a PIT BULL, Helen Keller had a PIT BULL (and Akita), the most decorated war dog EVER was Stubby, a PIT BULL. I could go on and on and on...... But, what happened in the 80's was a certain segment of the popluation-- one that is fond of gang life, drugs, and wearing their pants around their knees--- discovered the breed. They started breeding them for the very trait that was UNNATURAL to the breed-- human aggression. In order to do so, they had to MIX THEM with other, naturally human aggressive breeds. I'm not aware of a SINGLE fatal dog attack (or even non fatal) that involves an AKC REGISTERED, PUREBRED APBT, SBT or AST. NOT ONE. The attacks you read about almost always involve MIXED BREED DOGS that may, or may not, be mixed with pit bulls. BUT, since the bull & terrier breeds are NOT inherently human aggressive, why isn't whatever they are mixed with being blamed?!?! And this is another issue that yanks my chain--- ANIMAL AGGRESSION AND HUMAN AGGRESSION are 2 *completely* different things. ONE IS NOT THE SAME AS THE OTHER and a dog that kills a cat is no more prone to hurt a human than any other dog!!! In a dog's eyes, a small, jumpy, yappy chihuahua is no different than a cat or any other prey animal, it is OUR responsibilty as a toy dog owner to keep them OUT of harm's way and to NOT ALLOW them to antagonize other dogs *of any breed!!!*
Also, there is NO SUCH THING as a "locking jaw"-- the bull & terrier anatomy and physiology is THE SAME as any other breed of dog. My blood pressure is SO up!
