In general I think he is afraid of dogs. Any dogs who have visited have always been larger than him and he just goes into a different room and waits until they leave. 
If a kitten visits he is very tolerant of it. 
If I got a small dog, do you think at 9 years of age he could adjust? <with proper and safe intros?>

I had a cat many years ago, but not with a dog. But first I would have to ask myself, does my cat like dogs in general? If yes, then he may mother a new dog that also likes cats. If a cat doesn't like dogs in general, then it may put a tiny chi in harms way, especially if it is a territorial cat. If you are not sure as to whether your cat likes dogs, maybe you could have a friend visit with their dog that likes cats and see how he reacts.

 Hi, I have been considering getting a dog for a long time now. I am new to dogs in general and I was wondering, since I have a male cat should I get a male or a female Chihuahua or does it matter? I know I will have many more questions to come. I appreciate all help.
