I really don't know the answer to that, however I have heard of stories of cats excepting puppies. But if he is just tolerant of a kitten, he may act the same way with a dog/puppy or ignore it. I don't think that there is a definite answer on this one, since it will really depend on the two personalities. Are you looking to buy a puppy or are interested in rescuing a little older chi that already likes cats? I have seen many times, older chis up for adoption and they list that they like cats. What would you do if you got a puppy or dog and found out that he doesn't like them at all? If he ignores a dog, all is well, but if he attacks a dog, especially a chi, then the chi won't have a chance, and you are left with the decision that one of them has to go.....just something else to think about. Bear in mind, he could be afraid of larger dogs and that is why he ignores them, but with a small dog it could work in reverse, where he is not afraid and therefore could attack if he wants too.
I have a friend who has a 8 cats, then she rescued a mini American Eskimo dog. Eskies are prey driven dogs, so she had no ideal how it was going to work out. The funny part is that the Eskie realized she was out numbered whenever she would try to chase or fight with one of the cats. It was a lot of work for months with my friend to teach the Eskie she couldn't act that way. It wasn't until a kitten came into the picture that she actually acted like a mommy and protected the kitten from the older cats. Once the kitten got older and established her rank in the pack, so did the Eskie, and now they all get along. I think it's more personalities of each of the animals and really up to them as to who they like and don't like....just like we humans, lol! What made you decide on the chi breed? Any dogs who have visited have always been larger than him and he just goes into a different room and waits until they leave. If a kitten visits he is very tolerant of it. If I got a small dog, do you think at 9 years of age he could adjust? <with proper and safe intros?> Catherine --- On Sun, 7/15/12, Peggy & The Girls <[email protected]> wrote: From: Peggy & The Girls <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] new member and a few questions To: [email protected] Date: Sunday, July 15, 2012, 6:40 PM I had a cat many years ago, but not with a dog. But first I would have to ask myself, does my cat like dogs in general? If yes, then he may mother a new dog that also likes cats. If a cat doesn't like dogs in general, then it may put a tiny chi in harms way, especially if it is a territorial cat. If you are not sure as to whether your cat likes dogs, maybe you could have a friend visit with their dog that likes cats and see how he reacts. -------Original Message------- From: Catherine Padma Date: 7/15/2012 6:28:44 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Chihuahuas] new member and a few questions Hi, I have been considering getting a dog for a long time now. I am new to dogs in general and I was wondering, since I have a male cat should I get a male or a female Chihuahua or does it matter? I know I will have many more questions to come. I appreciate all help. Catherine
