Your Liza sounds as sweet as my Gigi. When I first got Gigi she was the same way for a couple of months. She would follow me everywhere, even to the bathroom and if closed the door, I would find her laying down on the other side waiting for me. She had it so bad, (fear of being abandoned again) that I was thinking of changing her name to Velcro! I was her 5th home within 3 months. Next to food and sitting on my lap, Gigi's favorite thing to do is going for long walks. She loves walking and wags her tail the whole time we are out! She too has learned a lot of things and commands and she was estimated to be about 5-6 yrs old when I got her. You can teach old dogs new tricks, because like us, they never stop learning things in life. She is the sweetest dog that I have ever had, a real love-bug!

Even though he may be timid at first, it may just take him a bit to get comfortable with his new home. I adopted my 3 1/2 year old Liza last December from a rescue group. She was a stray. She was shy at first and followed me everywhere. After a week or so she stopped following me each time I got up and just rested on the couch. Over time Liza has become a very entertaining little dog who is so obedient with no training from me. Although, I am teaching her to sit. She learns quickly. >From what I have read and talked to others about Chis, all agree they are very obedient, eager to please and are not barkers. Not long after I had Liza, maybe a day or 2, she was and is a very affectionate and devoted little companion. I call her my perfect dog since she minds very well. She loves to run like the wind chasing her ball, loves her daily walks and is just the sweetest dog and sooo much fun. Just give your little Merit a little time to adjust. This has been my experience anyway. Look forward to Pictures! His name is Merit, and I placed a deposit on him at the local APS shelter this morning. He needs the standard medical procedures (neutering, immunizations, flea and tick prevention) and then he will be ready to come home to me later this week! > > I am so excited about him! I always had dogs growing up, but Merit will be my first dog since living on my own. I am 24 years old, a graduate student, and live in a townhouse in a quiet suburban area. I have done a ton of research on chis and feel pretty prepared in terms of general knowledge, such as nail clipping, tooth cleaning, vet visits, etc. but I would really value some advice from chihuahua experts like you all! > > Is there anything you wish someone had told you that would have made training your chihuahua much easier? Is there a particular treat or activity that would be fun for Merit to try? Please share any tips and tricks you can think of that might be helpful for a new chihuahua owner. > > Thank you! > Michaela > > P.S. Merit is chocolate with a short coat (I will share a picture once he is home!). He's one year old and is fairly timid-- life in the shelter has been really hard for him to deal with because it is so loud and scary with all those dogs barking and howling. So I'd especially value advice on how to make him feel comfortable in his new home :) >
