Sorry to hear of your situation, Bob. I think that, apart from the current unfavourable business climate, this is all a re-manifestation of the "greed is good" mentality of the 80's. Everything is focused on getting the greatest profit margin, to hell with ethics or the long term. Maximise the bottom line in the short term, or even better, just make it look that way (nice spectacular corporate collapses recently, huh?), then walk away with a huge bonus payment. (The other approach that has been used successfully over here, is for CEO's to be so incompetent, and perform so badly, the board is forced to pay them a hefty settlement, so they leave before the term of their contract and do more damage). Never mind the people that have really contributed, they are just expendable. Source your requirements from some cheap "third world" country and "turn a blind eye" to child labour and environmental controls, that's no longer your responsibility. (What, me, cynical?!;-)
Anyway, about your question. It seems clear to me that the term "temporary" here is qualified by the requirement of an "expected date of recall", so in your case, this is not classified thus. Well, that's my reading of it, anyway.
